Through years of serving seniors in our state— including installing caption-enabled telephones and medical alert equipment — Anderson Communications was welcomed into hundreds of homes. During those visits, we gained a firsthand understanding of the everyday challenges many seniors face in their homes—things like cluttered walkways, loose railings, small maintenance concerns, and technology that wasn’t set up to properly support their safety and independence.

​Our role was limited by FCC program guidelines to installing the caption phone or medical alert device, confirming it worked properly, providing basic instruction, and completing the visit.

But during each visit, seniors would often ask:

“How do I copy and paste text on my phone?”
“Why isn’t my TV connected to Wi-Fi?”
“Can you help download this app and connect my glucose meter?”
“Can you help me move this dresser?”

My answer had to be- “I’m sorry, but under the program guidelines I’m only allowed to assist with the caption phone installation/medical pendant and training today. For other technology or household assistance, you would need to contact family members or a local service provider.”

We cared about the need.

But under those structured service agreements, our responsibility ended with the installation itself.

It became clear that seniors didn’t just need devices — they needed guidance, safety adjustments, and someone local who could stay, explain, and follow up.
